HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A CANDIDATE FOR TRANSCATHETER AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT?

Talk to your treating cardiologist and cardiac surgeon about whether you are a candidate for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Currently, patients who are at low risk for surgery should undergo surgical aortic valve replacement. However, clinical trials are ongoing to evaluate whether low-risk patients should be offered transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Let’s review details on how your CVG doctor will determine if you are a candidate for a transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

To understand your heart’s structure and function, your CVG heart doctor will order diagnostic tests, such as an echocardiogram, which uses sound waves to create images of your heart. With it, your doctor will examine the severity of your aortic stenosis and evaluate the heart’s overall function. A cardiac catheterization may be performed to measure the pressure inside your heart and to examine the coronary arteries. CT scans or MRI imagery may also be used to provide detailed images of your heart and blood vessels. Your doctor can then see the size and shape of the aortic valve and surrounding structures to plan for a TAVR procedure.

Risk assessment involves reviewing several factors that take into account the individual’s history and current health status. Age and existing medical conditions can make surgery more risky than TAVR. High or intermediate risk for traditional open-heart surgery can make you a better candidate for TAVR. The low surgical risk may indicate that traditional surgery is the better option.

A multidisciplinary heart team makes the ultimate decision about TAVR or traditional surgery. After reviewing all of your test data and medical history, your CVG cardiac team will collaboratively recommend the best course of action and present that recommendation to you for your consideration. You’ll receive the very best input on your situation based on your CVG doctors’ and heart team’s years of experience performing heart procedures. Having this diverse group of professionals on your side is a huge benefit for your current and future heart health.

Your doctor will discuss the results of your tests and evaluations with you, explaining the potential benefits and risks of TAVR compared to other treatment options. They’ll consider your personal goals and preferences, as these play an important role in the decision-making process. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns. This shared decision-making approach ensures that you’re fully informed and involved in the choice of whether to proceed with TAVR.
