HOW LONG DOES THE ELECTRICAL CARDIOVERSION PROCEDURE TAKE?

The procedure itself takes about five minutes. However, recovery time can take about 45 minutes. Even though electrical cardioversion is an effective treatment, patients can receive the procedure again if symptoms return, as it is safe to have the treatment multiple times. Recovery time is fast, and patients usually go home the same day as the procedure.

Let’s review the timeframe involved with an electrical cardioversion procedure.

Electrical cardioversion is a relatively quick medical procedure to restore normal heart rhythm in patients with certain arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. One of the most striking aspects of this treatment is its brevity, often taking only minutes to complete. However, the entire process can span a few hours, including preparation and recovery.

The preparation phase typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour. During this time, medical staff will place electrodes on the patient’s chest and sometimes back, connect them to the defibrillator machine, and administer sedation. The patient’s vital signs are also monitored, and any necessary adjustments to medication or equipment are made. This careful preparation ensures the procedure’s safety and effectiveness.

The electrical cardioversion is remarkably quick, often lasting only a few seconds. A precisely calibrated electrical current is delivered to the heart through the electrodes, momentarily stopping all electrical activity. This brief interruption allows the heart’s natural pacemaker to reset and regain control, ideally restoring a regular, synchronized rhythm. While the shock itself is nearly instantaneous, the medical team may need to deliver multiple shocks if the first attempt is unsuccessful, potentially extending the procedure time to a few minutes.

After the shock, the medical team closely monitors the patient for about 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, they observe the heart’s rhythm and ensure it remains stable. They also watch for any immediate complications, although these are rare.

The recovery period typically lasts one to two hours. During this time, the effects of sedation wear off, and the patient’s condition is continuously monitored. Most patients are able to go home the same day, but due to the lingering effects of sedation, they need someone to drive them.

While not part of the procedure, follow-up care is crucial for long-term success. Patients typically have a check-up with their cardiologist within a few days to a week after the procedure. This appointment allows the doctor to assess the procedure’s effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

From arrival at the medical facility to discharge, patients can expect to spend about 3 to 4 hours on a planned electrical cardioversion. This includes preparation, the procedure itself, immediate post-procedure monitoring, and recovery time.
