WHAT IS A CATHETER ABLATION?

A catheter ablation, also known as cardiac ablation, is a procedure used to treat cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. It is performed by guiding a thin tube to the heart that uses energy to create tiny scars in the heart. This is done to block abnormal electrical signals and restore a normal heart rhythm. The procedure can take two to four hours, and the patient is given medication to relax. Whether or not the patient is conscious during the process depends on the individual case.

During the ablation, you will be sedated while the doctor inserts catheters through small incisions in your groin. These thin tubes are guided to your heart, where they map its electrical activity and pinpoint problem areas. Then, either radiofrequency energy (heat) or cryoablation (extreme cold) will be used by your doctor to make tiny scars that stop the bad electrical signals.

On average, it takes three to six hours to complete the procedure, and the majority of patients are required to remain in the hospital overnight for observation. Recovery involves a short period of rest and avoiding intense activities. You may experience some discomfort in your chest or feel fatigued, but these symptoms typically subside within a week. In order to track your progress and make any necessary medication adjustments, your doctor will arrange for follow-up appointments.

Success rates in treating atrial fibrillation with ablation vary by AFib type and patient-specific variables, but overall, the procedure has shown to be very effective. Studies have shown that approximately 70-80% of patients with paroxysmal AFib (occasional episodes) achieve freedom from AFib without antiarrhythmic drugs after a single ablation procedure. For those with persistent AFib (lasting episodes), success rates are typically around 50-70% after the initial procedure. It is important to keep in mind that some patients may need a second ablation to get the best results. Even in cases where AFib isn’t completely eliminated, many patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms and improved quality of life. While EP studies are generally safe, it’s important to acknowledge that, like any medical procedure, they carry some risks. These may include bleeding, infection, or damage to blood vessels or heart tissue. However, serious complications are rare, and the medical team is well-prepared to manage any issues that may occur. Before the procedure, patients undergo a thorough evaluation to assess their overall health and identify any factors that might increase their risk. This personalized approach allows for appropriate precautions to be taken, further enhancing the procedure’s safety.
